A rigid base bridges the footwell and levels the back seat into one flat platform, which removes the drop your companion otherwise has to brace against every time the car slows or turns a corner. On a level surface that your companion can lie down properly instead of standing and rebalancing, that alone cuts most of the scrabbling and pacing that makes long drives difficult.
The waterproof Oxford shell takes the mess that travel produces.
